Near Tivat
A strange-looking road leads behind the airport and through a run-down neighborhood where a former tourist complex houses individuals displaced by the area’s most recent wars to the overly poetically called Ostrvo Cvijea (Island of Flowers), which is accessible.
The Saint. Michael the Archangel’s Monastery (Manastir Sv Arhanela Mihaila) is located at the end of the rough road. The most important historical site in the region is this one. Together with the ruins of a 9th-century church and a Benedictine monastery, remnants of Roman mosaics have also been found in this location.
From the early 13th century until the Venetians destroyed it in 1452, St. Michael’s served as the Orthodox bishop of Zeta’s residence. Nearby, surrounded by stone walls and covered by trees, is the adorable small Holy Trinity Church (Crkva Sv Trojice), which dates back to the nineteenth century.
From here, two more islands extend in a line, but you must use a boat to reach them (a taxi boat from Tivat or Herceg Novi will do the trick). A Club Med once operated on the bigger, more densely forested Sveti Marko (St. Mark’s Island), and the cottages can still be made out through the foliage.
